Mets Fall in Extras, Yankees Take Two out of Three

Yankees walked off in extras with a 6-5 victory Monday night.

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 6-5 in extra innings on Monday night in the Bronx. The Yankees won the Subway Series two games to one, taking the series opener 4-2 on Saturday and dropping the middle game 3-2 on Sunday.

In Monday’s contest, the Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Brandon Nimmo. The Yankees answered back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer of their own by Aaron Judge. The two teams traded runs in the second inning, with the Mets taking a 3-2 lead on a solo homer by Eduardo Escobar and the Yankees tying the game at 3-3 on an RBI single by Gleyber Torres.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning, when the Mets took a 5-3 lead on a two-run homer by Jeff McNeil. The Yankees answered back once again in the bottom of the inning, with Judge tying the game with a two-run homer of his own. The game went into extra innings, and the Yankees walked off with the win in the bottom of the 10th inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Carpenter.

The Yankees’ bullpen was stellar in the victory, with Lucas Luetge, Miguel Castro, and Aroldis Chapman combining to allow just one hit and one walk in 3 ⅓ innings of relief. The Mets’ bullpen was also strong, with Drew Smith, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Díaz allowing just two hits and one walk in 3⅔ innings of relief.

With the win, the Yankees improved to 36-21 on the season, while the Mets fell to 34-23. The Yankees will host the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, while the Mets will host the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
