Yankees Falter in Series Opener Against Rays, Drop to 1-4 on Road Trip
New York Yankees Fall to 27-30 Despite Strong Performance by Cole
The New York Yankees suffered a disappointing 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night, extending their road trip woes to 1-4. Despite a strong outing by Gerrit Cole, the Yankees' offense struggled to produce, leaving eight runners on base and going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Cole Delivers Quality Start but Misses Win
Cole pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight batters. He lowered his ERA to 3.33 but was unable to secure the win. The Rays took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Harold Ramirez, but the Yankees responded with a two-run homer by Gleyber Torres in the second.
The Rays regained the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Yandy Diaz, but the Yankees tied it up again in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Matt Carpenter. However, the Rays pulled ahead for good in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Isaac Paredes and a sacrifice fly by Josh Lowe.
Yankees Offense Struggles with RISP
The Yankees' offense has been struggling all season, and Tuesday night's game was no exception. The team went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position in the first four innings and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Aaron Judge, who leads the majors with 29 home runs, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Tough Road Trip Continues
The Yankees' loss to the Rays drops them to 27-30 on the season and extends their road trip woes. The team has now lost four of its last five games away from home and has a 6-14 record on the road this season. The Yankees will look to avoid a sweep in the series finale against the Rays on Wednesday before heading to Toronto for a three-game series against the Blue Jays.
