Industry calls for technology-open approach for CO2 standards revision
European associations urge for future-proof regulation
Brussels - A broad alliance of industry associations representing the European automotive sector, has published a joint position paper calling for a technology-open approach to the revision of the EU’s CO2 standards for cars and vans.
The paper, signed by 14 associations representing manufacturers, suppliers, and other stakeholders in the automotive value chain, calls on the European Commission to adopt a technology-neutral approach to the revision of the CO2 standards.
Future-proof regulation
The associations emphasize that a technology-open approach that encourages competition among different technologies is essential to ensure that the EU’s CO2 standards remain effective in the long term.
"The revision of the CO2 standards provides a unique opportunity for the EU to reaffirm its commitment to climate action and industrial competitiveness," said Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA).
"A technology-open approach will allow the industry to invest in the most efficient and cost-effective technologies to reduce CO2 emissions, while also preserving the competitiveness of the European automotive industry."
A call for a technology-open approach
The associations call on the European Commission to adopt a technology-open approach to the revision of the CO2 standards that:
*- Sets ambitious but achievable CO2 reduction targets;
- Allows manufacturers to choose the most efficient and cost-effective technologies to meet the targets;
- Provides a clear and stable regulatory framework for the automotive industry;
- Supports the development and deployment of new technologies;
- Ensures a level playing field for all technologies.
Conclusion
The associations believe that a technology-open approach to the revision of the CO2 standards is essential to ensure that the EU remains a leader in the development and deployment of low-emission vehicles.
"The automotive industry is committed to reducing CO2 emissions and contributing to the fight against climate change," said Jonnaert.
"We urge the European Commission to adopt a technology-open approach to the revision of the CO2 standards that will allow the industry to invest in the most efficient and cost-effective technologies to achieve our common goals."
