Giants' Season Reaches New Low in Loss to the Dodgers
0-6 Start Worst in 85 Years
Giants Drop 5-1 in Series Opener vs. Dodgers in LA
The San Francisco Giants' dismal start to the 2023 season sank to new depths on Friday night in Los Angeles, as they fell to the Dodgers 5-1 in the series opener at Dodger Stadium, extending their losing streak to a franchise-worst six games. With the defeat, the Giants matched their worst start to a season since 1938, when they also opened the year with an 0-6 record.
The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead against Giants starter Alex Wood, scoring three runs in the first inning off a bases-loaded double by Max Muncy. The Giants cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by Brandon Crawford, but that would be all the offense they could muster against Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin, who allowed just three hits and struck out six batters over six innings of work.
The Dodgers added two more runs in the fifth inning, with Cody Bellinger hitting a solo home run off reliever Jarlín García and Trayce Thompson driving in another run with a groundout later in the inning. The Giants had several opportunities to get back in the game, but they left eight runners on base and went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
"We're not swinging the bats well," said Giants manager Gabe Kapler after the game. "We're not making very good contact, and we're not getting enough runners on base. We've got to find a way to turn things around."
The Giants will have a chance to snap their losing streak on Saturday night in the second game of the series against the Dodgers. Logan Webb will start for the Giants, while Julio Urías will take the mound for the Dodgers.
