Los Angeles Rolls Past New York Yankees to Punch Ticket to Fall Classic
Dodgers Dominate Bronx Bombers in Game 5 Matchup at Yankee Stadium
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - October 28, 2022 - The Los Angeles Dodgers are headed to the World Series for the third time in four years, and the eighth time since the turn of the century, after eliminating the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. The Dodgers, who won 111 regular-season games in 2022, cruised to a 5-2 victory over the rival Yankees to clinch the series, 3-2.
Freddie Freeman led the way for the Dodgers, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Will Smith also drove in a pair of runs for Los Angeles, while Julio Urias pitched six solid innings to earn the victory.
The Dodgers wasted little time getting on the board, scoring twice in the top of the first inning off Yankees starter Luis Severino. Freeman drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, and Max Muncy followed with an RBI single to give Los Angeles an early 2-0 lead.
New York got a run back in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Harrison Bader, but the Dodgers extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Smith.
The Dodgers added another run in the top of the fourth on a groundout by Freeman, and they chased Severino from the game with one out in the fifth inning. Smith greeted reliever Lucas Luetge with a double to drive in another run and give Los Angeles a 5-1 lead.
The Yankees got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jose Trevino, but that was all they could muster against the Dodgers' bullpen. Urias was pulled after six innings and 91 pitches, and the Dodgers' bullpen trio of Evan Phillips, Yency Almonte, and Craig Kimbrel combined to allow just one hit over the final three innings.
The Dodgers will now face the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, which is set to begin on Friday, November 4, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
