Opening day roster news: No. 1 prospect Anthony Volpe still out

New York Yankees' top prospect Anthony Volpe remains sidelined with a lower back strain, manager Aaron Boone said Monday.

Volpe, 21, suffered the injury during a workout last week and has not played in a game since. Boone said Volpe is "day-to-day," adding that he hopes to have him back in the lineup soon.

Volpe is considered one of the best prospects in baseball and was expected to make his MLB debut this season. He hit .252 with 21 home runs and 66 RBIs in 110 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year.

Bad news for Yankees: Stanton placed on injured list with right calf strain

The New York Yankees have placed outfielder Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, the team announced Monday.

Stanton suffered the injury running the bases in Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox. He was originally diagnosed with a contusion, but an MRI on Monday revealed a Grade 1 calf strain.

The Yankees are hoping to have Stanton back in the lineup in 10-12 days. However, the injury could keep him out longer, depending on how he responds to treatment.

MLB fines Aaron Boone for comments about umpires

The MLB has fined New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone $5,000 for comments he made about umpires after Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Boone was ejected from the game in the eighth inning after arguing a call at first base. After the game, Boone said he was "frustrated" with the umpires and that they "need to do a better job."

The MLB's fine is for "public criticism of umpires."
